You may be wondering what our name stands for?

9 House is the pronunciation of ‘Nijenhuis’, the Dutch last name of our founders, husband and wife duo Ruben and Karla. Fittingly, it also translates to ‘new house’.

The business was started because we care about quality. We have a passion for beautifully crafted homes and a mission to bring our elevated touch to the Auckland market. Whether it be the structural soundness of the walls or the flawless workmanship in a complex staircase, each stage is approached with the same dedication and care.

For us, it is about the journey of bringing a home to life. We are not builders, we are custodians of your home and vision.

Our Founders

Ruben Nijenhuis | Owner/Project Manager

Ruben heads up every job we undertake. Born in Canada, he settled in Aotearoa in 2012, where he now resides with Karla and their two children on a 5 acre lifestyle plot in Wainui. A self-proclaimed perfectionist (in his job and when cooking Brisket on his charcoal Barbecue), Ruben works with his building team closely to ensure every stage is completed to the highest possible standard and your experience throughout is seamless. It has been said that his calm resolve and positive nature makes for an enjoyable journey throughout a build. He has also been known to say that you will never fully get him off of the tools!

Karla Nijenhuis | Owner/Office Manager

Karla keeps things running smooth and sound behind the scenes for the 9 House team. With a background in Marketing and Business Management, she takes care of the day-to-day across all things administrative, marketing and liaising with our lovely clients. In her spare time she likes to garden, get amongst the outdoors with her family biking, boating or skiing, and dream up more home renovation projects (for Ruben!).
